Picky about greens

Postby CircusCandi12 » Tue Dec 14, 2021 7:58 pm

Hi all, so I'm aware skinks need their greens sometimes but... The issue here is.. Stryker refuses lettuce and carrots. I gave him a meal of chicken, carrots, lettuce, and blueberries a while back and he only ate the chicken and berries. I watched him literally spit out a carrot once he realized it was in his mouth. Is there a way I can help him eat these healthier foods? He really seems to be stuck on only wanting those 2 things. Should I worry or will he be fine on a diet of just chicken and berries? Thank you in advance.

First of all, lettuce is not healthy. Dark leafy greens are. The only way to get a skink to eat them is to chop them up finely and mix with dog food. Frozen thawed peas and carrots work well too, and even on their own.

I see, thank you! I was always told lettuce is healthy for skinks, thank you for the correction!

So as was previously mentioned you want to make sure your greenies are dark leafy greens (collard, mustard, turnip, dandelion to name a few). Then, remember skinks need 50% a protein source, 40% veggies, and 10% fruit. You want to mix all ingredients together finely. Use a food processor. This will help your skink learn to not pick out just their favorites. If you need further assistance on what to feed, please visit the feeding chart of this forum.

You could also try appetite stimulants like bee pollen and herbs like basil? My skinks go crazy over the smell of basil.
