New BTS Owner!

Postby luisurquia473 » Thu Apr 23, 2020 5:51 pm

Good evening everyone!

I am the proud new owner of an Indonesian BTS (not sure the specific type) named Chancho, but I do have a few questions as I want to make sure my baby has a happy life and becomes as "tame" as possible with me. He/She is about 8-10 mo range, I set up the enclosure and let it inside, I have not seen it again since this early afternoon. It has stayed hidden inside the moist hide.

The room he resides in is my man cave with my other reptiles(not facing his tank) and my 3 dogs. I was watching reptilemountain.tv videos on youtube because he seems reputable and I do not know any better, my other herps being uro/beardies/leo. He mentions for a new BTS to not only make sure the 3 sides are covered but for the first week of acclimation to also cover the front except for spot cleaning/water/food so he can get used to his new home before having to worry and stress about the surroundings outside his tank as well.

Is this a proven theory? Will there be any issues with stress being that my dogs are in the same room? I don't have another room to put him in so this is what I have to offer and want to make sure I am taking care of him as best as possible. Any REAL insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

P.S if anyone can give me an idea as to the specific type I have by the picture I have uploaded it would be much appreciated, if possible of course :)

Yes, covering all sides should reduce stress. Some BTS will flee at the sight of anybody approaching the enclosure, some couldn't care less. As long as the dogs aren't barking at your skink or overly harassing it, it shouldn't be an issue. Obviously just make sure the tank is secure. An escape around the dogs or the tank being knocked over could be fatal. As for the species, it's Irian Jaya.
