Am I overreacting?

Postby Keoni_Da » Mon Aug 26, 2019 10:31 pm

So recently I went down to a petsmart and saw they had a blue tongue of unknown species and I read the info they had posted and checked out his enclosure, the humidity and temps were good and the setup was very bare bones but it worked. I was mainly concerned about no species listed so I thought to myself how is someone supposed to check care requirements before purchasing the animal if there's no species listed. I asked a worker and they didnt have any information on hand so I checked the adoption partner and found it was a state sponsored reptile rescue, so I gave them a call to voice my concerns telling them about not having a species listed and the gentleman informed me the reason the species wasn't listed is because they co habit all of there skinks and they just end up with babies every now and again unable to track the parents. I'm not sure if I'm overreacting. I'm sure the amount of money and space is limited for enclosures but it just doesnt sit well with me but I'm not an expert and just wanted to get an opinion someone with more experience than myself.

Extremely common in pet shops. Babies and gravid moms are imported by the thousands from 'farms' (more than likely reptile ghettos) in Indonesia. That is why here we recommend purchasing from a reputable breeder rather than a pet shop. The few dollars more spent will be much less than future vet bills. There are many owners out there that have no clue what species they have because of this, and when no longer wanted they end up at a pet shop or craigslist. All I can say is buyer beware.
