Newbie here

Postby missyhoops73 » Fri Jun 21, 2019 10:15 am

Just got our first blue tongue yesterday. We have done a lot of research in preparation, but still feel nervous about doing everything right since she is a baby. We are first-time reptile owners. We are in love with her already. I'm always looking for advice and tips. This is our girl, Louise, born on May 29th.

Any new experience can be nerve wracking. Seems like you have done the proper research and looks as if you purchased a captive bred Northern from the picture so you're already set up to succeed. These skinks are extremely hardy and easy to care for. Continue researching (I still do) and you will do fine.

She's a cutey …. when my George and Mildred were that young they loved snuggles on my tummy in the crook of my elbow , or curled up in my open upturned hand , or my shirt chest pocket.

Give a run down on her housing , how she's currently set up
>> tank dimensions
>> UV source type , brand , wattage , %UVB rating
how the UV source is mounted and if it's under or ontop a mesh lid
distance from her nominated basking spot
>> basking globe type
basking spot air temperature , and surface temperature (if you have a gun thermometer)
warm zone air temperature
cool zone air temperature
>> substrate she's got
>> feeding schedule & diet and supplementation schedule
>> lighting schedule
photos of the tank help.

Giving some of her live bugs by hand while letting her sit on you is a great way of bonding and trust building with a young BT skink.

I also suggest investing in a suitable sized clickclack tub and low profile kitchen glass topped set of scales, I'd be weighing her once per week and charting and graphing her weigh , you can easily see how she's growing and it'll give early indication of any health issues.
