Irian Jaya with black on belly?

Postby Suzle87 » Mon May 20, 2019 10:52 am

Previously you guys have said you think ven is Irian Jaya, I’ve always thought the same but wanted to double check as he does have some black on his belly so started to wonder if he could have some halmahera in him? Or is this sometimes the case with ijs?
On a side note look at his blurred legs trying to get me to put him down bless him.

From that picture alone it's tough to definitively ID. Looking back at some of your other posts though you have an IJ but it's definitely more resembling of a gigas (Indonesian) species than the scincoides (Australian). Irian Jayas have arguably the most variation and are the least understood of any species of BTS. There are theories that because their range overlaps with that of the Merauke, there are cases of naturally occurring hybridization of the two species. In my opinion, I see traits of both in your skink.

Black speckling on the belly is a trait that is not unique to only Halmaheras. Here are a few examples of my Meraukes.

Thanks for this, he’s always been a bit of an anomaly, interesting to hear different thoughts on it. It’s like his eyeband, he just nicks traits from all the species I think bless him. A mutt of the skink world with a bit of all of them in him! Thanks for your input :)
