Bleeding vent

So Saturday I had bought a new bts and he was very calm and cuddly (about 3 months old) the first day goes by well and I go to take him out of his tank and notice allitle blood. I immediately got worried and dug around the substrate to find more but couldn't. I checked goro from head to toe and found nothing. the next day I went to feed him and he ate alittle food but I found blood on the remaining scraps I open his mouth find no signs of cuts or any indication of where the blood came from. today I got to feed him and I watch as he eats this time for blood and I noticed that he squeezed and a plopped out blood from his vent. I'm thinking it was a parasite problem because I went to the same store yesterday to try a rat for him but the rat drowned himself and I looked and it had mites all over him. any feedback and suggestions o help him for the time being before I take him to the vet?

Can you give a run down on his diet and feeding schedule ?
Anything red or orange in his diet ?

He may have gastrointestinal parasites and a secondary gut / lower intestine bacterial infection this will show up as blood in the poos.
I would take a sample of his next poo to the vet for floats to work out what the issue is. Woth having the REPTILE VET give him a general wellness / health check at the same time (so you can identify any issues now and get ontop of them.



If he has a parasitic infection (ie Coccidia) the vet will prescribe relevant anti-parasitic meds and should also put him on some antiobiotics to treat the source of the inflammation (blood).
You will need to sterilize his entire tank and get rid of all the substrate / bedding (this will harbor the eggs of the paracites and continually reinfect him, you will need aggressive sterilization of tank and all this furnishings while he's being treated and until the vet tells you he is clear of the paracites.
Best to have him on sheets of paper so any poos can be seen immediately and disposed off with the paper they are deposited on (while he's being treated).

I wouldn't wait. Blood coming from anywhere is not good. He may also have an internal injury. Get him to the vet ASAP, and I'd also look around for a more reputable pet shop.

I would also agree to get your skink to a vet asap. Bleeding is never good. Especially if you have noticed it for 3 days now already. Lastly, and this is just my personal opinion. I would not feed live rats or mice to your skink. They can be dangerous and possibly injure your skink by biting if they choose to fight back. We see it all the time at my work (work for a vet). If you want to feed one, feed frozen or there is so many other things to feed for a protein source. If you haven't done it yet, check out the diet chart from our forum. This chart explains all the proper things to feed. Let us know what you find out with your pet. I hope it is just parasites.

So I took him to the vet, stayed overnight with various tests and ultra sounds. comes to find out he has three intestinal parasites. (hematochezia) (entamoeba) (trichomonas) he's on antibiotics and in two weeks will be back for a repeat fecal specimen and ivermectin and a re-examination says due to mild constipation seen on radiograph please be sure water is provided with easy access in the cage .provide optimal humidity to prevent incidental body fluid loss from breathing dry air. I didn't wait for any replies on the topic I went and took him the next day I posted this im glad I did cause I don't think that if I blew this one off he would still be alive.

Thanks for the update. Glad you took him in. Sounds like a nasty parasite infection. I wish your skink a very speedy recovery.
