Hello, so I just got a new three month old Irian Jaya. I bought him off someone who didn't have space for him anymore. He's super adorable and I'm in love lol.
Here's a pic of him/her(not sure of gender but I'm going with him for now) Named him/her Sonic

I do also have two questions, first does anyone know what a good humidity range for IJ's are? I've read they need really high humidity but there's never really a number range just a vague high humidity, I need something a little more specific, I'm keeping him on cypress mulch, his humidity is at 40% and I also have a humid hide for him as well.
Second question is I noticed today he has a rough patch of skin on the side if his head, the other side is completely smooth, I was wondering if that's like a bad shed and/or humidity issues? After looking at photos I could definitely comfirm he came to me like that.
Here are some pics of it

This is the other smooth side

So that's it just wanted to introduce myself and little Sonic lol.

Re: My new baby Irian Jaya
Hi and welcome to our forum. Sonic is adorable. Sonic does look more like a Merauke to me than a IJ. If so they do require more of a higher humidity. 40% is good, but most say 60-80%. Mine does good around 45-60% and never has had an issue so far. Providing a humid hide is excellent for them as well. You could also try using more a humidity loving substrate such as jungle mix, Ecoearth, or coconut fiber.
As for your second question, it does look like a bad shed to me. Just watch the area and see if it heals up. If not there are things you can try to help heal the area.
Again welcome and of you have any more questions just ask.

No problem with responding. I am not 100% sure if it is a Merauke or not. I would need better pictures to tell for sure. Depending on the type of breeder also will depend on if it is a IJ or Merauke as well. Not all so called breeders are true breeders if you know what I mean. I do hope that dry patch clears up for you.

It looks to me like it may be a thick banded merauke too, but clearer pictures would help. Can you give us some better pics? Especially top down, full body and of the front area?

I am not 100% sure what he is. I will leave it to the experts on this one. Glad to hear the bad shed spot is clearing up. Excellent new!
