Worried, mouth open

Postby Angcious » Mon Sep 05, 2016 4:13 pm

For the 2nd time today, I found Duma randomly in his cage with his mouth open. I have never seen this before with either of my bts.
The last time, he was behind his hide. I pushed it to the side and took pics.
He kept his mouth like that for about a minute, then opened it wider like a yawn, only he wasn't yawning. He still kept his mouth slightly open.
Then I talked to him and he came out, mouth closed. I fed him, he ate everything off the plate. Later, he was preparing to do his daily destroying the cage and was climbing about, so he seems fine now.
But, I think I saw him drag his head lower, like he was wiping it.
Does anyone know what's going on?
Coincidentally, I'd bought new cat treats...Duma likes a specific kind. I bought chicken for the bts and seafood for my cats. Earlier, my son gave Duma a treat and didn't realize the seafood one was for the cats and that's what he'd given Duma. Could that be what started this? Is he going to be ok, at least until tomorrow when I can take him to his vet?

Maybe he was posing - you got some amazing photos there!! You definitely need to repost #3 on the other thread where Nae was asking for photos. ;) Incredible!

My guess would be that he was just readjusting. They do this a lot after they have a drink of water, they lick some up, then stand there with their head and neck stretched out high and tall and open their mouth really wide for a while. Keep an eye out but I don't think there's anything to worry about on its own.

Thank you for the compliments on the photos!
You're absolutely right, it looked just like that readjusting but he wasn't anywhere near water or food those 2 times and I guess that's what caught me off guard. Plus I was a little freaked to find out he'd had something with seafood. I'd never given anything seafood to them before, not even sure it's good for them? My son said he acted just as excited about that treat as usual and accidentally grabbed his finger in the process, lol.
He came out for free time last night, was acting normal and curious. Didn't see him do the mouth thing again so, fortunately, I think he's ok.

Mine do that every now and then. Sometimes they do a big yawn after, sometimes not. Usually after eating, but not always. I wouldn't worry. Nice pics, beautiful skink!

Mouth Open Too.

Postby Zurba » Mon May 08, 2017 4:21 pm

:help: 'm actually having the same problem with mine.
My female Tanimbar Blue tongue skink is under her heat lamp and opened her mouth really wide three times. Is this how she gets rid of excess heat? Because I know that they can't sweat.. I'm just a little worried. :helpme:
I got her last Saturday, and she's my first reptile, and skink. :ohyes:

Guess she's too lazy to move somewhere cooler - I've seen it too in BTS and Water Skinks ,and of cause beardies too.
