Food resources and dietary guidelines?

Postby Twichl » Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:09 pm

Ok So I've been lurking around here for a while now, and I've found quite a bit of information about food and the importance of the calcium:phosphorus ratio, but less about other things such as impact of oxalic acid and thiaminase and no real comprehensive lists or spreadsheets. I currently keep aquatic turtles which need their own things or may have more exposure to certain things like thiaminase, which is commonly found in fish, or how deadly oxalic acid can be due to their high calcium need. Or one of the stranger ones is their relatively low tolerance for Vitamin A.

I understand there is minimal knowledge about the exact needs for the variety of skinks out there, but so I'm wondering what could be transferable from turtles to skinks and what isn't? Are there extremely comprehensive lists/databases out there? (Besides this one http://www.bluetongueskinks.org/forum/app.php/page/food-chart )
I'll give you all a list of resources I have for omnivorous aquatic turtles and general guidelines about various fruits and veggies and their potential toxicity.

I guess what I'm looking for is specific vitamins and minerals Skinks are prone to OD'ing too, their sensitivity to other things like taurine, oxalic acid, thiaminase and how these links would be beneficial in IDing the foods that should be fed in moderation versus whats safe to make part of their staple diet? Obviously, this research was done for turtles and torts so amounts and frequencies of feeding may not necessarily apply. Though Thiaminase has the same effect for all living animals that need vitamin B as far as I can tell.
Veggie database: http://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/ - This is a huge database, but you should be able to quickly find any and all things you've ever fed your skinks.
Article on Thiaminase and it's relation to vitamin B deficiency http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/Thiaminase.htm
Small omnivious food chart https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RXS-NaNnJJ6roudthCdatKb0fpVftct7C6hlAgkNspg/edit#gid=0

I hope what I'm asking makes sense. :)

Hi!

Well the short answer is no, I bet you won't find a comprehensive list out there. At least not one readily available.

On taurine, it is just not known what effects it has for blueys or what sensitivity they have to it. This is one of the reasons why many keepers choose dog food over cat food, because cat food has taurine and we don't know if that's good or bad. I suspect it is a similar thing with the other things you mentioned - just not definitely known. However, there are members on here that have posted in the past, so use the search box to type in things like 'taurine', 'oxalic', ''thiaminase' and 'vitamin A' to find those past threads. A couple of members are very knowledgable about those things (like El Lobo) and you will see their posts pop up on each of those topics.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Let us know what you find out. :D

Thanks, if I ever find out more or get in contact with someone who's researching the subject I'll update you guys.
Part of this idea came from learning about raw feeding for cats, them being super popular pets (and mammals) there's a plethora of information about vitamin/mineral ratios per pound, and if I were to get a skink it would be a very simple step to just separating some out for him... except that skinks have extraordinarily different systems. Separating food before adding taurine... no problem, except what about all the other additives or the iodized salt?
I started to drive myself crazy before posting this.
