Pepper and other updates (lots of photos!!)

Postby Cedar » Sat Dec 24, 2016 3:40 am

Hi guys!

So I know Im not a huge part of this community (though i am an avid lurker hehe) but I have fallen head first in love with my blue tongue and the reptile world!!! Sorry if this is a long post but since you guys have helped me a lot with my first bluey i wanted to share C:

This start of this year hasnt been so great for me, I got sick for the first couple of months and could not attend school, so since i could not complete my senior year i ended up doing an animal course. And it was SO MUCH FUN!!! Im not going to go into a lot of detail but I will about my work placement.

I actually did it at a private pet shop called Totally Reptiles and I had the BEST three weeks ever. Sorry about being so excited but it was amazing. And you guessed it i worked with (lots and lots) of reptiles from geckos and lizards to snakes, fish, turtles, and even invertebrates . It was super hands on, lots of feeding and cleaning and handling (!!!!)

They didnt have a lot of blueys but had like 7 shinglebacks!!!! They were super cute and always fell asleep in my lap. I also worked with a lot of australian snakes and got to handle them properly for the first time and fell in love. I think this year i truly fell in love with herpetology, it was such an awe inspiring experience i have a GAZILLION photos but ill just post the one with the shingle c;

Now on to the love of my life, the apple of my eye my most precious cupcake: pepper who ive had for around 2 months. You might have seen my past posts about a cage aggressive skink or a skittish skink. Well Pepper has changed SO MUCH. I dont even think it is the same skink. She used to BOLT when she saw me come into the wrong and now she readily comes to greet me!!!! She even comes out of her hide to say hi and i just... mY HEART

Now i try not to anthromorphsize, and when people coo over how affectionate pepper is i always jokingly say she's just sapping my body heat and soul ahah.

But rly i feel so much love for the little sausage. She will make a mess of her enclosure, nosung and scratching trying to get out and the second i take her out, she conks out on my shoulder instantly. Once i thought she was sick/lethargic at how readily she would fall asleep on me. And if her human pillow DARES to move she will huff and burrow her lil face more into my neck. And she will huff if i dont let her climb into my shirt hehe. Im literally her pillow slave. cx (dont worry guys shes actually super active when she wants to be and will explore every inch of her enclosure and the couch but most of the time she is a lazy butt)

Im pretty sure peppers goal in life is to find the ultimate comfy napping place, the sausage has made a mess of her enclosure trying to get into a comfy spot, making substrate pillows, pushing her hides etc. :lol:

But on a more serious note, Pepper has improved my mental health so much. Even the cleaning has helped a lot. Sometimes ill be too tired to get up and pepper will just sit there with me, and i know it is cliche and whatever but pepper probably has changed my life in showing me a passion i never knew existed and definitely mproved my health both mentally and physically.

Please share pictures of your scaley puppies, and maybe their stories? They always make me super happy!!!

(My fave photo is the one where me and pepper both have double chins sorry for the double derp!!!)

THIS.

That's literally all I can say. My story is almost identical to yours. I've always struggled with sometimes-debilitating mental illness, and as a result, I've had just about every "comfort animal" pet you could think of - bunnies, sugar gliders, fish, cats, leopard geckos, hamsters... The list goes on. Of course I love(d) them all dearly, but there was no effect on my health until I adopted Riff-Raff, and I had someone who not only depended on me to survive but also seemed to want to be with me (she's sort of shut down for winter now, and boy am I feeling it, but the statement still stands). I also had no idea what direction I wanted to take my life until she came along, but sure enough, after her (and to a degree, my leos), I'm set on herpetology. So thank you for this post; it was the perfect thing to stumble across on Christmas eve. :)
