Bts not eating, making squeaks?

Postby jmhg11 » Mon Dec 05, 2016 5:44 pm

My new bluey is only eating from hand and only will eat meat and fruit no veggies. He was also making some squeaking noises when he breathed he's not anymore but should I be worried? Also what can I do to get him to eat

First off, what was he doing when he was making the squeaking noises? Is it a sort of whistling sound? Mine makes a sound like that when she's really intently sniffing around something (like her food). If he's not doing it anymore, or if he only does it when he seems curious about something, I wouldn't worry too much.

It is weird that he'll only eat from your hand; I've never heard of that before. Maybe he's not very hungry? Someone with more experience will have to help me out.

As far as not eating his veggies, that's very normal. Try mincing them up so small he can't possibly separate them from his meat and mix it all together, and introduce them slowly. I use fruit as more of a treat, anyway, so if he doesn't like it, that's probably not a huge problem since it's more like lizard candy than anything, but if you wanted to, you could do the same with fruit as you do with the veg.

Hope this helps! Don't worry too much; new blueys do weird things sometimes.

What are your temps in his warm side and cool side of his enclosure, and what is the ambient temp in the room his enclosure is in? Make sure that he has ample access to warm temps as well as increased humidity, like a humidity hide, preferably on the warm side of his enclosure. Keep an eye on him and make sure that his mouth and eyes are clear and not bubbly. I find my blueys will some times make noises for one reason or another, I had one I was very concerned about, but after a couple weeks and two sets of x-rays, nothing was found to be wrong, so keep a watch on it, but unless it continues and progresses its likely nothing to worry about.

I have one bluey that will only eat when I feed him from a spoon. I finally am able to get him to eat out of his dish using Repashy Bluey Buffet, so it could just be a matter of finding something he really likes. Your guy is still likely settling in as well, so that could have something to do with it. How often have you fed him since you brought him home? Have you tried a high end wet cat food to get him going, you can transition to a better dog food once he starts eating readily.
