Clipping nails.

Is it safe to clip my BTS's nails? If so, what is the best thing to use? My IJ BTS has really sharp nails, making it hurt when she climbs over me. I know that with mammals you have to be careful not to cut too much or else they'll bleed, but I didn't know if it's similar to reptiles. Thanks!

Yes, it is a good idea to clip their nails. One, because if they are long you will get scratched, and two, because if they grow so long they start to curl under that is not good for the skink.

You can just use a set of human nail clippers - get ones with big handles (or even the ones for babies) so you have good grip and control. You could try putting a towel or pillow case over their head/body while you do it so they are distracted/calmed and don't pay attention, and just have the foot you are working on poking out of the towel. All you need to do is snip the very tip off where it comes to a sharp point. That way, you will not cut too far down and make them bleed. Kind of depends how long they are though, but that's what I suggest first up and see how it goes from there. Good luck!

My skink's nails used to be very sharp as well, but what I did was add some big smooth river stones (like what you can buy at a gardening store) to his basking area where he likes to dig, and they keep his nails worn down perfectly. Maybe you could give it a shot?
