First year breeding

Postby alexestrada17 » Tue Dec 15, 2015 10:24 am

This is my first year attempting to breed Northern Blue tongue skinks. I have 1.1 and a possible other females. The two females have been in brumation since first/second week of November (No heat or food, only fresh water available). The male has been a bit reluctant and is usually just pacing around. It seems that just this week he is hanging out a litte more.

Could it be that the male is ready to breed and the females are still brumating? Should I begin to try and wake up the females by turning up the heat and offering food? Or should I continue with my plan to turn heat back up and offer food first weeks of January?

Thanks in advance!

Watch the male and see if hes dropping sperm plugs, usually if ready or close males start dropping alot of sperm plugs, like in readiness in case he comes across females as they need to ckear thise before mating

I dont shut my northerns down fully with no heat as they are a tropical animal, they have cold cages but with a hotspot still available and usually i just wait till makes start dropping plugs then start doing intros, usually im just a tad early as females might not be quite ready

Males cycles for me have lasted as long as 2 months so may be no harm still waking your girls in jan

Thanks Richard, I'll keep an eye out for the plugs and I'll just continue to wait.
