Am I crazy?- newbie

Postby krmike » Tue Oct 27, 2015 4:24 am

Hey, I am new here. I have started getting serious about getting a blue tongue every since my student brought his "sandfish" skink to class. Honestly, I didn't know anything about blue tongues until I started researching skinks.

Some background. I live in South Korea. Getting reptiles here is a bit harder...and way more expensive. I have found a source of captive bred "silver black" blue tongue skinks. They are beautiful.

I read the care sheet and know that housing 2 together is a bad idea (even though the source told me as long as you get a 4 foot habitat its no problem). So, one it is. I am going to link the habitat that was recommended to me.

It is 36 inches long, has 2 light sockets built in, vents, etc. How does this look?

Here are some images from the source I found.

I guess I think I am crazy because these guys are very expensive! But, i have fallen in love with them. I do worry though. What do you guys think? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

36" long should be big enough as long as the width is around 18-24". The tank itself looks very nice and well built, and I'm not sure about the weather in South Korea but as long as your house/room the lizard will be held in is around 70f degrees or more 2 light sockets should be enough. Good luck :)

I went ahead and ordered the habitat.

I have been reading and looking at pictures to compare, and am I correct in my thinking that the skinks i posted above like it to be slightly more humid?

I see no skink posted above. From your description, it is an axanthic Halmahera, or maybe just a silver phase Halmahera. If so, yes, humidity needs to be very high. I keep mine at 80%; however, 65%+ should suffice. It needs to be high not only for easy shedding/scale health, but for respiratory health.
