Hello Blue Tongue community. Pablo and I just registered to the site not a week ago and have taken a TON of information in. When I say "Pablo" I mean of course my new BTS. I thought I would start my first post off by just introducing the two of us. I have been into all animals since early childhood, however; I have an absolute love for reptiles. I'm not sure if its the aspect that there is always a wild side, or just my own curiosity. I'm a firm believer in the fact that an animal can be captive bred and "tame" but they are still animals. They all have some kind of a wild side to them no matter how tame. I live in the City of Trees, Boise, Idaho. I purchased Pablo from a new local pet shop which I probably wont be returning to. I say this because he had to order Pablo from his reptile dealer. I asked him several times who it was with no intent to go over his head and do it myself. I like to support local shops. He was very vague and wouldn't answer me directly. Another note I asked for a Northern Blue Tongue. Pablo is not. He swears up and down he is Captive Bred, and may be. Pablo has a wild side to him which we are working on. It hasn't been even a week in his new home so the majority of interaction for now is just feeding, changing water, ect. I believe he is Indonesian but not totally sure I'm new to Blue Tongues. What makes me so sure is that his tongue is blue and at about half way it is pink. But once again I'm not an expert. Either way I already love him no matter how bad his attitude at the moment. Pablito is here to stay for many years to come. The pictures I have are not the best because we are not at the handling stage yet. Anyways I am always appreciative of tips and can handle any criticism so don't be shy. Thanks! =D

Captive bred he may be, but not captive bred in the U.S. ...or at least it is EXTREMELY unlikely, as he is a Halmahera type Indonesian (Tiliqua gigas gigas) and nobody in the U.S. is breeding them in captivity yet. They used to call it "Farm Bred" but since that's taken on a negative conotation, they now have started passing them off as "Captive Bred" as, technically, they were bred in captivity on a breeding farm. And, extremely rarely do dealers deal with captive bred BTS, they deal with importers.

Actually sue,farm breds arent generally captive bred either,they often use the term cb as in captive born,as theu collect animals from the wild already gravid

Farm bred or farm raised is just a pretty up term for wild collected,if theu were actuallu legitamatlly breeding them they wouldnt be sending there adult breeders in with shipments.let alone the many gravid ones that come in with import shipments

They still get held in holding pens with tons of others until theu have enough to fill orders

Wild caught,farm bred or raised is 6 of one half a dozen of the other

In short its the same thing with a tarted up name so people feel better

That's a pretty common story that I've read on this forum from peeps in the US. Nice BTS though. If you haven't already, do some searches and reading of other threads for great tips on setting up humidity right, very important for halmaheras. I can't tell you myself, I'm still a newbie and never seen or cared for a halmahera!

And there are some awesome breeders of northerns on this forum so hopefully they are near you for your next bts

Gorgeous little Halmahera! Reminds me of when mine were babies! Very pretty skinks they are, but humidity is a big issue with them. Should be at the very least 60-70%. Best of luck with that adorable little one!

Thank you for all the tips and compliments. Yeah I have been fighting the humidity after hearing what it should be. Will be ordering a humidifier this weekend.

I'm the other newbie who asked for a northern and was given a nervous indo...thought I'd share a picture of her since she and Pablo seem to look so much alike! Her name is "Bowie" and I was finally able to handle her over the weekend. I'd love to hear an Pablo update soon!

Looks like you got yourself a nice little friend there. A great species to start with and really get into the hobby. Halmahera blue tongues are Pretty Docile species for the most part. so again welcome, stay active and enjoy the forums.

What a beautiful dragon！In china,We Call them"merauke bluetongue skinks.In chinese:马老奇 蓝舌 石龙子.ma lao qi lan she shi long zi.
In Our country,BTS fans will be Merauke and irian jaya and Indonesia(tiliqua gigas) distinguished.
It's hard for us to get to the Eastern、Northern and the southern. The middle and the Western have no one to own them.Tanimbar Blue-tongued Skink only a handful of people have.
In China,Indonesia, Merauke, Jaya Irian we get the time is a Adult body, I do not think they are CB, more like WC, after feeding.
