Saying Goodbye to Smaug and Thanks to the Forum

Hello everyone.

As some of you may know, I posted a thread a few months ago asking for advice on taming an aggressive blue tongue. I picked up my first blue tongue - a feisty caramel northern who I named Smaug - at the beginning of March and was having some difficulty taming him. I tried lots of different things advised in this forum but unfortunately, Smaug made little progress. I was at a crossroads; I didn't want to give him up, but I also wanted a skink that I did not have to be fearful of. Luckily, being on this forum, you meet all kinds of people looking for all kinds of different skinks I made a trade with Dood, another member on the site who is looking to breed and has dealt with difficult reptiles in the past. She has a friendly mixed breed skink who she was interested in trading and I jumped at the chance. I am not looking to breed, just have a more tolerant skink, so the fact that her skink isn't pure-bread is no skin off my nose. If all goes well, we will each be receiving our skinks tomorrow.

I guess I just wanted to write this for interests sake as well as to thank all the forum members for their advice. I really love how informative and interesting this forum is and have used it to answer much of my questions. As a first time skink owner, I am always checking for new and interesting things on here.

Anyway, sorry if I bored anyone; I just wanted to put it out there. I will post pictures of my new girl as soon as she comes in. I plan on naming her Hotdog Princess, which may seem random to some but if anyone watches Adventure Time, they will totally get the reference.

Wow , it's great that you didn't give up on Smaug or Skinks altogether . And making a trade and switching homes, seems like it will work out
for both of you and your Skinks.

I did something similar with my first skink which I got on this forum as an adult rehome. I know he was very aggressive as a baby. I wouldn't call him aggressive now but no matter what I did he stayed pretty high-strung and never wanted to interact with me at all no matter what I did. He'd tolerate some holding but he really just wanted to be left alone to bask or burrow or explore. I can respect that but since I rent I don't have room to keep a lot of animals, and I didn't want that big cage being taken up by one that wanted nothing to do with me. I found him a great new home with a very experienced reptile keeper and breeder who already adores him. Now I am going to do what people recommended in the first place and try to work with a breeder to get a baby that has a more friendly calm personality. I've got a baby reserved with Zach, I'm really hoping Pearl gives us a big healthy batch!

Good Luck Saber! I was in the same boat as you; if I had the space, I would have just kept my brute and got another skink. But I didn't have the room and I wanted a skink that I could at the least not be scared off. It was a happy coincidence that Dood was looking to trade and that I ended up with a more tolerant skink. I'm sure you'll find a friendly one soon too.
