New to BTS, need some help.

Postby Ahhchilee » Mon May 04, 2015 9:31 am

HI, I'm new to this forum and I recently bought a BTS! I'v been wanting one for many moons and finally got one.
I was hoping someone could help me out and tell me what type of BTS I got. I think he/she (to young to be sexed still) is a northern BTS.
I got him/self, from a reptile store cause she/he was in a small 10 gallon tank! I felt so bad I had to get her/him a better home!
They said she/he was captive breed and is about 5-6 months old but I think she/he is a bit older.
What do you guy's think? :P

Not a Northern but an Irian Jaya.
Welcome to the site :D
If you don't mind I'm going to separate this into its own thread. :)

Impossible to tell size/age since there's no reference point in the picture to tell how big he is. (I have no idea on sex either, none of the pictures are such that a guess would be reliable; I just tend to call all unknowns "he".)

I agree it's an Irian Jaya and a beautifully marked one :)

If the store is selling him as a 6 month old captive born his mother or more likely he was imported as a baby from a "farm" in Indonesia (which is how they get away with calling them "captive born" :hair: )since the birthing season for BTS in North America is staring now (late spring/early summer) which is opposite to Indonesia (late fall/early winter)

Thank you so much both of you!
I never knew that, As for size i could post some pictures up if you like in comparison to my hand. From what i know he is about 10-12 inches long. Takes up most of my forearm when laying down long (including tail). :D

It wouldn't matter whether his mother was imported from a "farm" or was wild caught in Indonesia, as long as she gave birth here the babies would be captive born. I think it much more likely that females are unknowingly shipped out gravid than that they would intentionally include tiny babies from a farm --that would pretty much be a guaranteed death sentence as half or more of healthy adults don't survive the ordeal of mass importation.
No way to know for sure though.
Because there's also no way any pet store is going to be honest about the questionable origins of the animals they sell. They will ALWAYS say their reptiles are captive born. Most often they will say they have a breeder that supplies them. But no one has yet to get a name, email, or number to any of these "breeders" to get answers to questions. And I find it very funny that 90% or more of these breeders supply the pet store with the wrong species info for the skinks they breed...

Regardless if Pancake ( my skink's name :P ) is captive breed or wild caught, I'm happy to have him. He is very sweet and friendly, and has yet to bite anyone. At most he just walks away from me since i'v only had him a week or so.

By the way, I had another question. I had gotten Pancake chunky coco fiber bedding. Is that a good choice? I know most people say aspen but I was worried about spinsters as well as I just like the look of coco fiber (even if its a little hard to find Pancake in it lol.)

Judging by the pictures i take it you mean coarse coconut husk bedding, a lot of us use it including myself.
