Does healthy Northern have pink lined jawline?

Postby Lucifer » Thu Apr 16, 2015 8:08 am

As you know from my previous posts, Lucifer 4 1/2 Northern BTS has been fighting recurring stomatitis and I am trying a very aggressive form of unconventional treatment. Some days, his jawline looks really great to me, but we have been fighting this for awhile so I am not sure anymore what a healthy Northern's mouth should look like. Is it normal to have a pink ring around inside perimeter of jawline? The only pics of skinks with open mouths that I found in books & online are of skinks hissing. Some pics show pink or red especially in the corners of jawline, but I am not sure if that is the norm or because the skinks' adrenaline is making that area pink or red because of the hissing or aggressive behavior. Lucifer currently has one spot of stubborn redness (open sore) on his jawline that keeps coming back. Some days it seems to be gone but then the next it is a dark red spot again. I continue to clean his jaw after feedings and then wipe with a Q-tip soaked in hydrogen peroxide & water solution. I don't know whether to be concerned about the mild pink ring around the whole inside of his jaw (possible stomatitis at rest). Lucifer is an absolute sweetheart and a much loved family member. He is a gentle soul and is so great about feedings through a dropper etc.. We have developed a special bond and it's as if he knows that I am trying to help him get well. It has been a long terrible winter this year in NY, but Lucifer was finally able to enjoy some time out in the fresh air two days ago when it reached 80 degrees (SUN and natural Vitamin D). He loved it! He just kept shooting his blue tongue into the air as if he was trying to drink the air. Just what the doctor ordered SUNSHINE!!!
