Tank set up advise

Postby Margeryblue » Tue Jan 20, 2015 6:00 am

Hello again BTS community. New questions from a new owner. I currently have an Indonesian(?) baby blue tongue (been told she's a few months old, she's the size of my hand). She's currently in a 20 gallon tank with repti bark for substrate, two hides, a water dish, and there was a food dish but all the veggies went dry from yesterday and I've read they only need food every other day. I'm planning on getting a 40 gallon for her at petcos tank sale (which runs to the 24th in the U.S.) I had some problems figuring out the lighting but I think I've got it at the right temperature now. The larger hide is her basking spot and it tops out at 97 degrees. Her cool ends lowest tempt is 79 degrees. I wish I was a tad lower but she's been hiding under her basking spot for a day now so I'm assuming she's fine. I'm hoping that when I have a larger tank the temperature on the cool side will drop a bit. I can't really say if she seems content so far as I've worked all day the few days I've had her and whenever I'm home she's hiding. She did seem to eat something as her food was moved around and there's a stray piece of lettuce under the other hide. She has not defecated yet that I know of but she has managed to urinate on both couches (and me) in my apartment. I have the day off tomorrow and I'll be trying to give her dog food and see if she comes out at all.

Does anyone have advise? It's my first skink and I'm looking for all the help I can get to make sure it's a happy lizard.

It's best to have the lighting at one end, so then it can choose the gradient of warmth that it wants, also its not iceberg lettuce is it?

The other light is a uv bulb and doesn't produce heat. And it's romaine lettuce :) I don't eat iceberg I wouldn't let my lizards eat it either.

Congrats on your new baby! You will be amazed at the growth rate of these little guys! Its almost like they go to sleep and wake up bigger....don't wait too long for that larger tank! Best of luck with your new little one.
