My baby's here!

Postby Kayley » Fri Jul 25, 2014 12:26 am

Hi all! I just joined the forum but I've been lurking and reading up on everything over the past few months. Today my little baby came safe and sound all the way from James in California! I've named my little guy Jelly Roll, but he mostly gets referred to as a "little goober" by me and everyone else who sees him. He's still very shy but considering the fact that he just got here today after a long plane trip, his temperament is incredibly 'chill' and actually rather inquisitive! He was trying to climb up my shirt and onto my head after just a few minutes of hanging out. I'm really excited to get to know him better as he gets more accustomed to his new home.

Right now he's housed in a 36x18x12 vivarium, and over the next year or two I'm going to look into getting one that's a little bigger. I've got him on aspen shavings for now, and until he gets really settled in, I've got him on canned dog food. As soon as he starts eating regularly I'll try to sneak in more fresh veggies!

Here's two (not too great) pictures of him -- in the second one you can see his great coloring and tail. He's a total cutie patoot.

He's number 14 from litter B -- I think you might have one of his siblings! I love being able to check up on his brothers and sisters, just one of the benefits of going through a breeder.

Here's a Jelly Roll update, one week from the day I got him!

Image

He eats dog food every day with vitamins and calcium+D3 mixed in twice a week, he's started defecating every day (finally!) with healthy urates -- I've caught him drinking water besides his moist food. He's still a little shy but today he spotted me enter the room and when I came back with food, he was at the front of the cage waiting expectantly.

Question for the more experienced bluey folks here... do you all think he looks too fat, or is he just growing healthily? I offer about 2 tablespoons worth of food each day and he eats various amounts of it every day. Should I only offer 2 teaspoons or is it alright to let him eat as much as he wants?

In my opinion, babies can't be too fat. As long as they're continuing to grow longer, I let my babies eat as much as they want. Once they max out their length and start filling out I start watching more to make sure they're not putting on too much pudge.
