Update on the new Irian Jayas

Postby Scincoides » Sun Jun 02, 2013 6:08 pm

Well sad news... I went in to check on them day before yesterday, and the male was looking kinda ragged. He had been the thinner of the two when they came in, but i was confident that he would fill out after a couple of weeks. i Offered him a live rat pink and our normal skink food mix, and he refused both. i decided to leave him alone for the rest of the day. When i went in to shut the lights off later that evening, he was no longer with us. I know it sounds a little dumb because we've only had him for a week and a half, but i was heartbroken. My best guess is that between the stress of being imported, and then changing hands a few times over a month or so was too much stress to handle. Poor little guy. Anyways, there is good news though. Our nasty mean yellow female is doing amazing. She is gaining weight daily and has just about doubled in girth since she showed up. She is huge! the yellow really seems to be getting brighter to.

Really sorry to hear that. Keeping animals can be very painful at times.

I'm really sorry for your loss. If anything happened to one of mine I would be shattered. Hopefully your girl will continue to be big and healthy, my suggestion is to inquire and try to find out if it was anything else other than the stress so it can be prevented next time.

Yeah its a pain. I'm sure he passed to to the typical stress/poor care prior to importation/parasites that plague most imports. The care here was identical to all of our other blue tongues

Yeah man. Its not pleasant. We hardly ever lose anything over here and we have hundreds of animals. It was extra unpleasant to have it be one of my favorite critters

So sorry to hear that. I'm sure importing an animal that had gone thru all that was stressful for you, too. Your little yellow lady looks so pretty though!

Thanks everyone. He was a really cool skink and I was really excited to finally have a pair of IJs again. I haven't owned a pair of IJs since I moved in 07. But I guess it wasn't meant to be, and realisticly he was probably suffering and god knows, being snatched from the wild and shipped over here in a crate full of other skinks was probably miserable for him. At least he isn't suffering anymore.
