help with building an enclosure

Postby mjk19 » Wed Oct 17, 2012 11:55 am

I'm not the most handy person at all. But i would like to build my own enclosure for my northern bts. I have no clue where to begin. Can anyone help me out and give me a detailed list on how you built your own enclosure? Thanks a lot.

I build custom furniture for a living so here's some free advice.

1. If you've got lots of free time , have tools and know how to use them then give it a shot. If you consider your time valuable then it's cheaper to buy a ready made one.
2. I just skimmed the link above and would not recommend building it this way. Just skimming the photos he does some steps backwards which make it less water resistant, less visually appealing and more time consuming.

This link gives you an idea of how to plan it out and cost considerations. He leaves out some key information but has a lot of good points/ideas.
One of the key mistakes that the original link made was that he was applying the edge tape after assembly. You have to apply and trim the edging before assembling the unit.
I just built 4 melamine units but my next 4 will be plywood. It looks nicer and when properly finished is suitable for high humidity species.
If you aren't handy with tools you may be able to convert an existing piece of furniture from a thrift store.
