Can bts get depressed per say

Postby UroFreak13 » Sat May 11, 2013 2:36 pm

So my wild caught female indo has alwayse been kinda shy but since I've started taking her outside, she don't want to come back in, she stays buried, which she did before, but for most of the day. When I try to take her out she huffs, I was starting to get her relatively tame and now this seems like a step back, any ideas are appreciated.
As a side note she still eats and recently had a clean fecal.

id just say your bts is incredibly stressed from being outside, maybe take it a little easy?

i dont think your wild caught skink is depressed cause she had to go inside again, i think she is incredibly stressd out from the move out to unprotected, unsafe and big area she has no idea about.
new smells, open sky full of danger, no safe spots, no food source, ground predators.....
at least my skink went into hyper wild super stress mode when outdoors, every single time.

its just what i think though.

How exactly are you keeping her outside all day where she stays buried and doesn't want to come back inside? Or, are you saying that since you've started taking her outside for short periods of the day, she now tends to stay buried when she's inside her tank? Or, am I misunderstanding somehow?
Many skinks tend to get reminded of their "wildness" when you take them outside; they huff more, some even display. But even most of those calm down right away when they are back inside.
But it's nothing unusual for them to get a little feisty when outside.

They can also go through periods of time when they stay buried a lot, but I've never thought of it as them being depressed. They can have periods of weeks, and even months, when they just prefer to stay inactive and hidden.

All 5 of my calm and friendly adult Meraukes, and most of the babies, huff when I first go to pick them up. I just think of it as: that's just what they DO. :D

My Meraukes are the sweetest when I have them inside, but when I take them outside, they go crazy.. hissing, flashing tongue, ect. I don't get to worried about it though, I'm glad they have those defenses.

Susan it i the second thing, i take her out for short periods and she is great lets me hold her no huffing what so ever, but whe she cones inside she squirms, huffs and stays buried. I could be tha stress and maybe im overreacting a little, just seeing if this behavior is somewhat commun.
Thaks for the replies!!

taking them out can stress them,we often take them out in the open,no where to hide, remember in the wild an exposed bluey out in the open is a ready meal for many a creature, the mellowness when taken out could be a scared bluey freezing up,its usually when u reach for them again that they display,if they do it once returned inside it could be there way of thinking oh crap, there taking me outdoors to expose me to nasties again

i keep blueys indoors and other ones im lucky enough to be able to keep outdoors, the outdoors ones are quite mellow, well theres a few defensive ones, shyer ones but the majority behave like indoor ones, see u coming they charge over to cage enterance to see if u have treats, climb on me if i go in ect ect

there in familiar surrounds, have cover near by if they feel the need to use it ect, there at home, take indoor ones out and they lose all that,we stop them going for cover, there in unfamiliar surrounds,so its only natural they get a little defensive, its not access to sun that does it,its exposure to the unknown, possable preditors, lack of security and the human hand preventing them seeking said security

natural instincts
