What does your skink mean to you.

You have to buy it food, can't go on a vacation as easily as other people. Costs money for lights etc. Takes place etc..

But what does your skink mean to you? Does it make you smile to see him going around in his cage? Do you laugh with him, are you happy when you let him crawl over the grass?

Why do I ask this. Well first of all I want to apologise cause this is not the place to talk about personal troubles, but I really have to. I have a personality disorder called schizoid which means I don't socialise well. People hate me on forums I get banned for talking about my struggles. But in all this struggle I want something, something that keeps me alive something that keeps me happy. So I thought of owing a reptile, since I get depressed rather easy and just crawled myself out of one, I want something easy. A dog needs to much atention which I can't give always. And also bunnies will get lonely with the way I am so I thought a reptile is awesome. They can be on they're selves and I just need to feed and clean once a week. So I'm still considering it but decided to ask some help here. To see why you all owe a skink and what it means to you.

Allthe sacrifces are worth it, my mom thinks im crazy because evertime he comes out to bask or eat im like mom come look, i cant help it there facinating. I have cats who are alwayse wanting to cuddle or what not and i have fish who just dont give a crap ahah. My bluey is te best of both i can take him out and handle but if she dosnt want to ill look at her. Mine is a wild caught but i like the challege of getting her accustomed.
About your problem i know what you mean thought this may not be tha place but i know what you mean, you just need to talk to someone. Good luck whatever you choose

I had a depression from school, and the more i studied and the more i learned, the emptier i felt. i couldnt even tell what i liked and disliked at one point.
the only real connection i had to anything was animals, but my dog had died when i was 16 (i was 18 at this point), and i had developed allergies towards some animals just recently which made things like that even harder to think about.

so i started looking at animal potos in search of a good pet, something entirely for myself that could keep me company a long time. i looked through picture books, a lot of picture books, and i found absolutely nothing.

then i bought an old animal image collection at random (i do stuff like that a lot) and well, there was a bluey!
instant click, instant connection, and then i saw nothing more than bts
first i got Litchie, and then in november i got Pomme

my skinks mean so much to me. i can look at them and feel that they manage so well with that they do and feel content with so little, and still stay true to their nature no matter what. being reminded how close i am to nature every day is an amazing feeling.
another thing are their names, Litchie and Pomelo are fuits im able to eat, its a sign of hope for myself and my allergies
some cultures treat certain animals as if theyre holy or keep them in perfect condition so as to be lucky, a well kept animal shows a gentle spirit. theres just nothing my skinks do that doesnt make me happy.

My skink are everything to me. Especially Thiswai, my now passed away Irian Jaya.

When she passed away, I didn't know what to do. I was bawl 24/7, for 2 weeks straight.

My Meraukes are not close to me as Thiswai was, but I hope they will be.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with talking about personal problems here; especially since you are looking into getting a BTS. There is also a separate forum here called "Everything Off-Topic" where you are welcome to talk about ANYTHING.
Just so you know, we've had a few people on these forums (in just the few years I've been here) with problems just like yours; you might find it helpful to start a discussion on the off-topic forum about the struggles you face and what you wish others knew, or did, or didn't do.

I posted on your other thread that I thought a BTS sounded like a good pet for you; now that I know more about you I think a BTS could be a PERFECT pet for you. I would make sure though that you get either a young one, or one you can be sure has a good temperament. But other than that, I can't think of a better pet for you. You might be able to find another pet that is even easier to take care of, but not one you will enjoy more--because of their huge personality.

I have had ALL different kinds of pets, many, many, many, and here are some of the reasons I enjoy BTS:
1 ) HUGE personality
2 ) make VERY LITTLE sound
3 ) smell VERY LITTLE
4 ) they sleep at night
5 ) they are awake during the day
6 ) they are cute
8 ) they are awesome
9 ) they are FUNNY
10) not everybody has one
11) VERY EASY to take care of--only take MINUTES per week for minimal care, and can be left for several days (or longer if they guaranteed have water) without anybody to "babysit" them
12) they are fun to interact with,
...but most importantly
13) you don't need to feel GUILTY if you don't have time to, or just don't want to, play with them!
--they are happy to come out to explore, but most are also perfectly happy to be left alone.

Do not feel alone. I have schizoaffective disorder. I also have skinks.

I may not "play" with my skinks as much as many members here do, but it provides me happiness and comfort to care for them/spoil them. I love to educate people about them, and to learn as much as I can about them. They are great pets because they dont "require" constant attention (unlike my dog, my cat, and ESPECIALLY my hedgehog!), and when I have down periods, and dont hold them as often, they dont get depressed or suffer separation anxiety. They do get held a lot by my guy, which is great I love to cut their nails, and clean off any stuck shed on toes, and sometimes I'll admit...I do wish I could "groom" them or paint their nails LOL.

My reptiles have gotten me through a lot, and I love them. Skink TV is always a good way to relax and take my mind off of things, and decorating their cages with things I've personally made is really rewarding.

There is nothing funnier to me than a skink with food (especially banana!) all over their greedy little faces

Northerns definitely are the "hardiest" in that they can tolerate many different conditions very well, but I wouldn't say that that is all you can go for. Even if you have a desert terrarium, you live in the Netherlands, and your air is going to be much more humid than ours is in the Utah desert. I have Meraukes, and struggle to keep their toes healthy over here in the dry air, but I bet Meraukes would do just fine over there
They all need their terrariums to be pretty hot, and I think with the natural humidity you could go with pretty much any of the more common species. I don't know how hard it is to find BTS over there, but I do know there are several breeders in "your neck of the woods".
