Raw Diet for a Tegu and BTS?

Postby Ellie_A » Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:45 am

We have a cat with food allergies and our vet has recommended that we change her to a raw diet so we are going to be using Carnivora food. Since we will have this food in the fridge now anyway, I'm wondering if it would be a suitable food for our tegu and blue tongue skinks?

Their list of products include:
-finely ground whole carcasses of:
-chicken carcass
-beef
-lamb
-duck
-rabbit
-bison
-elk
-quail
-vegetable and fruit patties containing romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, bok choy, celery, carrots, pears, apples, and blueberries
-beef green tripe patties containing beef stomach wall and green stomach content (I have no idea what that is and I don't want to know!)
-beef offal patties containing beef heart, liver, kidneys, tongue, spleen, and lungs
-Chicken meaty bone patties containing finely ground chicken backs

My thought is that it would make a good addition to their diets, any opinions?

what does not sound great on that list?

amazing.

but remember, variation is the key to success :) and its still your average 60/40 division between veggies that is recommended, with fruits and berries as treats.
with that much to pick from i dont think it will be a problem though.

however, if the food contains added taurine, usually in cat food, id not feed this as staples. i do buy some applaws catfood for my skink a few times a year due to how nice it looks and smells though.

I was actually wondering a very similar question :o
My dogs get a bit of raw dog food now and then and it is made of up of whole carcasses too. In the past I have only fed a teaspoon or two to my skinks once and they seemed to love it. I was wondering about adding it more frequently for extra variety.

Whole carcass meat is awesome, the food sounds great. However I will say tripe is completely and totally disgusting (worst food I have ever fed), so of course the skinks adored it -.-'

I'm trying to switch my cats to a raw food diet. I'm sure I'll be throwing their cat food into the lizard meals for the protein portion.

I'll still feed other stuff for variety but I love the idea of the cats and lizards eating the same food, especially if I can get a good deal on it. I'm even toying with the idea of making my own raw food which would be time consuming but cheaper than the prepared raw diets. Most of my skinks love tripe as well and livers / hearts etc are great to feed them as well.

Green tripe, is unwashed tripe- so the stomachs and the contents included. It's often considered as a food unfit for human consumption.

Katrina, I have looked into raw food diet for dogs, and there are some great resources out there for cats as well. It is very important to make sure it is a complete diet (which I'm sure you are already aware of).
The source I would use if I ever get my dream breed of dog would be called Prey Model Raw. There are forums for both dogs and cats for this diet.

Haha - yes, I've already looked into that. This is a bit off topic, but I'll be feeding my cats the Prey Model as much as possible because it is better for teeth / jaws and easier than grinding all sorts of food up into mush. However, I don't always have time and I'm out of town quite a bit. So when others are taking care of my cats for a few days I can't expect them to feed prey so I'll be using a store bought raw food or one I make myself and freeze. Right now I'm feeding this: http://www.naturesvariety.com/ and really like it. This is likely what I'd be tossing into the blueys food.

Making my own raw food with the correct ratios of meat, organs and bones and grinding it would be ideal for blueys because I wouldn't add taurine until after.
