Couple quick questions from my reading

I am getting a 75 gallon with a screen lid because I have a parrot that is flighted and potty trained and I don't want her going in there.
I have a 100 watt uva/uvb solar brite light. Does the mesh really take so much rays away? I have never noticed ill effects in my frogs or other reptiles from the screen.

Is buying fresh water snails from a pet store safe? I worry about parasites. I have the canned ones right now but if the kink is MBD then I want to give natural calcium as much as possible so I don't over do it.

Lastly, the set up he was in was a 20 gallon with a hide under a 100 watt zoomed mvb. The water bowl was a small cat litter pan like breeders use for larger snakes in tubs. There was no room to move around! Could the kinks be from being so cramped? Maybe injuring himself?

Hard to say I guess, hopefully soon I can see his breeder and she can look at him. Bless his heart!!!!!!

Yes. It doesnt take nearly anything to block out the rays to a point where they are doing little to no good. Blueys dont really "need" UV if you are supplementing with vit. D3. I personally dont use UV, but it is a personal choice, if you do it right it definitely wont hurt them.

Being concerned about parasites is a valid concern, but it would be hard to find captive bred snails. Canned is probably the safest option to avoid parasites. If you want to give natural calcium, perhaps you would consider eggshells? I believe you can cook them in the oven and grind to a powder. Many greens also have natural calcium. The food chart here is very comprehensive. If you do end up buying aquatic snails, I'd recommend going Mystery snails (aka apple snails) since they arent as hard and pointy as some of the other species commonly found in stores.

Kinks can be caused by Metabolic Bone Disease, being cramped, or injuries. As long as he had enough calcium, being set up with an MVB should rule out MBD. A vet visit and possibly some x-rays could help check for broken bones, but it is my belief that broken bones usually cause noticeable swelling of the area around the bone. I think the most likely cause is the lack of space. There are cases of snakes that have developed kinks in their spine because of being cramped for extended periods of time in small cages. I know sometimes they can develop what looks like MBD kinks from constantly bending themselves to try and climb the cage walls.

Their back can get a very characteristic bending point that makes them look a little squashed sometimes, if glass-climbing.
several kinks are however unlikely as they mostly climb on the glass from the same angle, causing one major bend.
That he has had mbd, climbed and injured his spine due to more fragile skeleton is possible however.

as long as you supplement calcum with d3, and feed him food like usual, it should not progress further. just dont let him bungee jump

Thank you all very much. He did enjoy the egg yesterday and ate almost all of it.
I'm going to be looking for another Vet a the one I had previously used for my snakes and frogs gave me some bad advice and I'm feeling upset about it.

There is d3 in the supplement and I have an MVB on him but there is a screen because of my Grey. I suppose even I it defeats it with the screen I use supplements every other feeding so its covered, I hope.

Its very hard to find a vet that can do exotics, and even harder to find one that is good with amphibians, snakes, lizards, etc, all in one person. Its a lot of knowledge to have to have! That being said, if you are uncomfortable with your vet, by all means change! Be grateful that the advice given did not harm your animals. There is nothing wrong with interviewing vets

I worked as a veterinary assistant (mammals, a little wildlife) for 6 years and changed careers because they were all about the money. I am currently a Humane Officer, if anyone has seen Animal Cops you get the idea (and have maybe seen the Houston one with my mentor and former boss Deborah Michelson.
I have seen the worst of the worst and the happiest of endings. I got into reptiles after a lovely 5 lined skink got caught in a glue trap ( yes I reamed them) and used mineral oil to slicken it up, didn't even lose a toe! I used a warm cloth, wiped what I could and kept it in a 10 gallon with a humid hide, fed lots of goodies, saw normal poops and once I saw a shed it was time for release. I got bit. A lot by that skink but it was worth it. Reptile cases kept falling in my lap, I got a conviction on 8 snakes once for cruelty, a first in my city and even seized their betta fish.
Frogs and toads have been my passion. I adore them and though I am new to BTS I want to learn as much as possible for use in my cases. Obviously I can't say exactly where I work, or talk much about current cases. I am really happy to have found a forum where there is an easy going atmosphere and so many long time keepers willing to share their experience.
