Bts not eating

Postby Lahb999 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 2:36 pm

Noam my Bts has recently stopped eating.

He ate a meal on Sunday
Then on Monday
Nothing on Tuesday
Tiny bit Wednesday
Noting Thursday
Nothing Friday
Now it is Saturday and I am quite frustrated, and worried

Can anyone explain why? He doesn't like insects to eat
Doesn't need to she'd did that mid of January
Temps are proper
In Canada and it is cold outside,
But still active so not in brumation
Just started this
:helpme: really worried
Temps are back to normal but light was weak for past days I guess cause it just stopped working on thrusday

Looks healthy otherwise, no sickly appearance, just a bit skinnier than usual due to lack of food
Pooped on Friday at 7:00pm

How old is your skink? If he is an adult, you have nothing to worry about, as skinks only need to be fed every 3-7 days once adults. Even my skink who is only 5 months old only eats every other day, sometimes skipping a meal even when I offer! As of now, I wouldn't be worried about it unless your skink is very young or showing signs of illness.

Age does make a difference, although I wouldn''t worry too much even if a young bts went a week or two without eating much. I only offer food once a week to my adults.

Your skink definitely should not lose weight from skipping a couple meals though. If there is truly a significant weight loss in that short time, there could be something wrong. Don't rely on how he looks though, you need to actually weigh him. Skinks commonly look thicker or thinner from day to day without gaining or losing any weight.

If he's 26" long, he definitely doesn't need daily feedings! Cut back to once or twice a week. If he is in good condition he can go months without food, so offer healthy meals once or twice per week and don't worry if he doesn't eat. Don't start offering treats or favorites to try to entice him to eat either - you'll just get a picky BTS. Reptiles have very slow metabolisms and don't need to eat all that often - if you're feeding him daily then he's probably never been actually hungry and is just eating his favorites.

There is some good info on here: http://bluetongueskinks.net/foodchart.html
