Superworms

Uh, so I bought some superworms, but now what do I do with them????

I would probably give them to the skink. But I suppose you could eat them yourself...

I suggest feeing them outside the tank so the worms don't escape and burrow into the substrate. Also, if your skink is small or a wuss (or you want to be cautious) you can crush the head before offering it so the worm can't bite.

I offer super worms once in a blue moon just as a treat. I usually will throw 3-5 in at a time. After about a week they are all gone. Occasionally I'll find a dead one that didn't get eaten. I use reptile carpet though so they don't really burrow into the substrate.

I dont feed him in his viv, and I think I will squish the heads after searching and reading some about superworms. Plus, Stinky ran from the live crickets we offered the other day! LOL

I've heard a lot of hype about superworms, but before I'd heard about it, I fed them to the skinks as treats and never had any issues. I have since changed to Dubia roaches since they are just better. Less chitin, more protein etc. Plus they can chase 'em! They cant climb glass, are way easier to breed, and my skinks at least LOVE to hunt them down, where with supers they were pretty meh.

Also, why dont you feed him in his viv? I've heard this very prevalent myth with snakes, but never omnivore lizards like skinks. Monitors...now THAT I could understand.

Usually the reason people decide not to feed in the viv with skinks is because of the substrate. Especially with things like superworms which will burrow into the substrate never to return. Other foods could also get substrate on them, but it's less of an issue. Other reason some people use is for a positive out-of-tank experience - the lizard associates coming out the tank with a yummy meal. I do this with treats sometimes, but not with regular meals.

Yes, i do it with my snake to avoid ingesting substrate. The previous owner spoon fed him. so, since i am used to feeding out of viv (also found it to be very helpful with our turtle for keeping thinga clean) and he was used to feeding out of the viv, we'd do it. So, gar he's eating great from a spoon with my son holding him......so, it's just turned into some fun interaction for my son as we TRY to limit handling and let him settle in.

oh, ok. I have done that with treats but never full meals. I also have never had a problem with them getting substrate in their food though. And soon that will be a totally moot issue anyways because they will be getting fed on a tiled second level! yay!

I'm not prepared to purposefully bring roaches into my house. not crazy about the superworms, and neither is the skink which is fine by me.

Snails are non-invasive (although most feeder roaches are too), slow moving, cant really escape...and even come CANNED! They are also super beloved by skinks (and me) and good for them nutritionally if you want to go a different route.
