Looking For Some Advice For Spyro! (+PHOTOS!!)

Postby AnnaMonroe » Mon Nov 26, 2012 3:40 pm

Hey everyone! So my Irian-Jaya Spyro will be four months old in two weeks.
He's 11.5 inches long & weighs 170 grams.
I still feed him daily, & he gladly eats the entire plate everyday. :edward:
I was wondering when I should be cutting down to a few times a week?
He seems happy & has a big appetite so I kind of don't want to stop feeding him daily as of yet.
What do you guys recommend? Should I cut down?!
Just the thought of not feeding him everyday makes me feel bad! :noknow:

& on top of that, my supplementation is calcium+D3 every two feedings and a multivitamin on Sundays.
If I were to be feeding him every 2-3 days, when should I be supplementing my calcium and my multiV?
Thank you for reading and helping :)

Oh and of course, something for your viewing pleasure, lmao:

You can probably keep feeding him as u are until his growth slows down,40 to 45 cm in length,he may slow down himself by then anyways,as when food stops going towards growth they get fat, when u do slow down supplement calcium once to twice a week still

Hes looking great, love his coloring ,looks in tip top shape and quite at ease with you

Hey Richard! Thanks a lot, I'm glad he's looking very swell to you(:
& Yes surprisingly he's very calm and tame and just chills out with me all the time.
He often takes naps on me, closes his eyes when I pet him, etc etc.. I love his personality.<3
I've always looked confused when people would write that their skinks run & hide because Spyro is always out in the open & doesn't mind my presence at all.

So anyways, you're recommending that I only cut back on food when I notice that he isn't growing as fast as he is at the moment?
He currently gets the calciumD3 three or four times a week (every two feedings) and then the last day of the week he gets a multivitamin supplement by itself.
I just specifically want to know what I should do, I don't want him to get FAT lol. Larissa showed me some photos of fat blueys, and it was not appealing! They looked like eggplants O__O

I really love Spyro's chubby round head  And colour. Beautiful.
Sounds like Spyro has an appetite as big as my Crowley's. If I let Crowley eat as much as he wanted though,he would be obese! Haha

if u have good temps, young short blueys shouldnt get to fat,as they put it into growth,eg the more they eat the faster they reach adult size, but once they get close to adult size growth slows down,so if you try to feed to much they get fat,as they dont have the need for rapid growth anymore,so when they get close to adult size, best bet is to feed them just enough to keep a good amount of body weight on,most slow down them selves, but some keep chowingit down and get quite obese, particularily females,as they think they need to bulk up for brumation, yet it never comes for many pet ones

Crowley's temps are all perfect, so herp vet says. 20 degrees on cool side. and a layered basking spot, top is 37 degrees, bottom is about 32-35 degrees. she just doesnt know when to stop eating! You also though Crowley was born quite late (possibly April, you thought) And thinking she will catch up on length now the weather is warming up a bit. Last length and weigh in was; LENGTH: 28cms WEIGHT: 160gms and that was on the 12th of this month. her sibling is pretty much the same length, but slimmer, who belongs to someone else. I really think she is just a pig and will hopefully grow length ways more than width ways during the summer

maybe yeah :) i regret giving her away now. the guy seemed sincere and knowledgeable and is part of our reptile group down here. but he has the bluey in a small tank filled with sand and just a box. With the food and water bowl smack bang in a pile of sand. did try to tell him they ingest sand easily, but not acknowledging the advice/warning. Also he mentioned that the bluey has become aggressive and goes to bite him regularly. makes me sad because they were both so friendly and tame while i had them. Also doesn't feed him any vegetable at all. only dog food and cooked chicken because its a fussy bluey.did tell him to hide the veggies in the meat. but again, no reply :(

Thanks for the help guys (and compliments lol), I'm not totally sure exactly what I'm supposed to do (meaning exactly how old he should be when I cut down) but I guess I will just take notice of when he doesn't grow as rapidly anymore and then cut back on the feedings.
For now, I'm comfortable feeding him daily since he's still growing. His portions aren't insanely large though. I think they're about just right.
I think what confuses me the most is the supplement schedule that he would be on if he was only eating a few times a week rather than everyday. MonWedFri he gets CalciumD3 and Sunday he gets Multivitamin, but this is because he eats daily.

Its hard to go off age,as they grow differently depending on how they are raised, some folk get them adult size in under a year, others dont make that size for 3 to 5 years, letting them grow more naturally with full brumations outdoors,eg my blotcheds take years to reach sub adult size, outside they brumate for 5 to as long as 6 months

Hence its better going off there size, and growth patterns and when it slows down more on there weight
