Wild Blotchy Resting

Postby El Lobo » Sat Nov 17, 2012 8:12 pm

A short video of our resident wild female blotchy from earlier this year. She has lived here for a number of years and is quite relaxed in our presence.

Even though she is so motionless she looks almost dead, she is very beautiful. I love seeing wild blueys under any circumstances. Thanks for the video.

They use there noggins to make a depression in soil ,the soil in norms district looks clayish, hence why it shows up well on a bright yellow headed blotchie

She looks good norm, doesnt appear phased by your presence at all, happily lazing about soaking up some rays, she may have another litter this season, looks in great shape anyways

The video was from last April and it sure is clay at our place. :hair:

I stopped the video after 3 minutes as she didn't make any movement other than closing her eyes. She is quite content to just sit and watch us even though we try not to get any closer than 1 meter so as not to unduly disturb her. I don't know if she had a litter this year even though she had fairly fresh looking mating scars which possibly may have been from previous time in 2010. She seems to breed biennially so I wouldn't anticipate any this year, unless she skipped a year.

Would that really be "skipping" a year?

They are so endearing. They seem to say a lot with just closing their eyes ...

"Maybe, If I just close my eyes and lie really still, they'll get the hint and go away".

Thanks, norm. It's great to see they don't look at you as being a big threat, probably because of the respectful distance you give them. No wonder they hang around your place year after year.

I am fairly convinced this girl only breeds biennially. She has been around here for a fair while and had a litter in 2008 and another in 2010; I saw her prior to both birthings and she sure was gravid. There is a strong possibility she had a litter in 2006 but I can't state so with certainty. I'm sure that was the year there were Blotchies all around the place, at least 8 different animals of varying ages over the summer. We couldn't drive out without checking under the vehicles as they would often bask up against the wheels. We are doing the same now after having the younger wild female doing the same a couple of weeks ago.

This girl sometimes basks up against the brick wall where the clothesline is and will just sit and watch as the washing is hung out. I think a few reptiles have a sense as to where they are not at risk and welcome. My father had a big old wild Blotchy that used to follow him around when he was gardening, waiting for him to toss the snails to her.

It's only the luck of the draw where you live that will decide which you will have as visitors.
