Escaping the heat

Postby Lea » Sat Nov 03, 2012 9:36 pm

It's 35 degrees and overcast, too hot for basking, so the shinglebacks are seeking refuge in some cool and sheltered hidey holes.

They're smart enough to know when to get out of too much heat. Weather has been very inconsistent though, we still have the heater on quite a bit overnight.

I love the pictures with the noses just poking out from under the grass.

Trust me, I know how they feel. It gets to like 200 Fahrenheit here in Arizona. It makes you want to crawl into the refrigerator and take a nap. Nice pictures Lea!

Saphirre on a 120 day,if u measure ground temp in the sun it can be well above 200 degrees

Even when air temps more mild, the temps of substrate ,rocks ect can be exceedingly high

I was outside with my male Blotchy taking some photos on a day where the ambient temperature was only 25 °C. The patio area felt a bit warm and he kept moving to the shaded area so I checked the surface area with my temp gun....it was 47°C. Surface and ambient temperatures vary enormously.

Thankfully the world is a calmer, less grouchy place, because you live in the cooler climes of Tasmania!
