My new BTS!

Postby KeiraBts » Tue Oct 02, 2012 11:31 am

Hi! I'm from spain and this is my new bluey. it's a Northern Blue Tongued Skink, and the breeder said it's a female, of course not sure. She's about 4 months and more or less measures about 27cm (I think more). She is really sweet! Some pics:D

Nice skink and glad that there's another European member. We're heavily outnumbered out here! :P

Thanks to all! I think she is awsome, i had a gecko before but you know, he was so nervous and a bit aggressive...It's hard to believe when she falls sleep on my legs or arms. I read that skinks were docile but I didn't thought they were as docile as she is, i guess it depends of the personality of the bluey too. But I was lucky :D
By the way she hasn't got a name yet, so if you have some ideas!
Yes I see, most of you are from America, Canada or Australia. I came to this forum because in Spain it's not a very common lizard kept as pets and there's no much information, and I read that this is the best web-site about them so...

That day she was eating grapes, apple, zucchini and mango. The pices of apple were too big, it was one of the first time i fed her and i'm new with bts so i didn't know the correct size

she is very cute :D (yes, im another european member)

i recommend moving the water to the cool side instead of the basking spot. as with all other food, bacteria and algae grows quicker when the temps rise (to a certain temp, at which they die xD)

there is no way to know if shes male or female at her age. when she is fully grown, take a photo of her from above and the members here can guess. otherwise theres only two ways of knowing which gender it is, either by finding sperm plugs (males sometimes but not always drop them), or by observing their behaviour when they are with another skink. i do not recommend the last mentioned since it can be very dangerous to attempt.

nice to see someone from spain. apart from at the zoos ive visited and some reptile shows on teneriffe, ive never met anyone in spain owning or even talking about captive reptiles. Por supuesto, he visto muchísimos lagartos en la naturaleza allí.
my spanish skills are more than rusty.

I know a lot of Spanish newt and salamander keepers, but that's a different story. Love the eye colour of your skink.

Thanks!
Linnea, I put the water bowl there because if it touches the coconut fiber it's a mess, and it's always dirty. Well, the breeder told me that she is a female, but he is not sure, anyways...i don't care if it's a male. He/she is really sweet!
There are a lot of people here in Spain that keep reptiles, each year there's a reptile fair in Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla and it's always a success.
