My skink is on a calendar! And new tank.

Postby Rhianimal » Sat Sep 29, 2012 12:51 pm

There is a reptile expo in my area today. I'm a member of the local reptile society. Imagine my surprise when I picked up one of our calendars and saw my own skink full page on the back!

I submitted the picture a while ago, never heard anything, so I didn't think anything of it. But it's so cool! It really excited me to see. I decided to get a new tank:

This is 48"x18"x20". Same dimensions as my old tank, but the glass is not a scuffed petstore fish aquarium, and the sliding doors/lock mechanism is really nice! Very happy. :D

That is a nice surprise. What a way to celebrate.
Sliding glass has many benefits over top access.

Where did you get the tank? I am thinking of upgrading to a larger tank and I like this style.

Got it from Big Al's table (Canadian aquarium store). It is a TetraFauna ReptoHabitat 75 Deluxe (I believe). Very nice cage.

Congrats on your celebrity skink! The photos of the new "crib" are an inspiration for me to change mine. I think Ard is bored with his. Great setup!

Thank you all! Gucci Mane seems to be liking his new cage. He really likes that cave hide. Every day he curls up in it and piles dirt everywhere. He's an enthusiastic digger.

I'm having some issues keeping the tank temperature quite right... the tank is an extra 2 inches taller than the old one, and better ventilated. The cool side is only reaching ~72 F or so max during the day if it isn't warm outside. Hot side is definitely warm enough with the basking area at 95-100F. Overnight the tank can get to 65F or closer to 60F if there's no extra heating. Way too cold!

I bought a large under tank heater yesterday and set it up. Hopefully the under tank heater will help hold the whole tank a bit warmer during the day. I checked the night temperatures and it was ~70-75F on the warmer side and ~65-68F on the cooler side so that's not as bad. I might want to add a 50 watt bulb for overnight heating, not sure yet. It's either too hot or too cold. I'm worried about fire risks using a rheostat all the time.
