stef i shut mine down fully indoors, usually 4 to 6 weeks, but theres lots of ways to do it
only issue with offering lights is if its cold but not cold enough to shut down,or warm but not warm enough to eat they can lose condition, outdoors they can bask, but alot of there range they cant get that warm, probably do it more to maintain a safe shutdown temp,eg after very cold weather
spot on norm,re scott, the easterns here find warm places to brumate, eg compost heaps, when it warms up they axtually leave it to cool down, lol
they are prone to respitory infections outdoors if they try brumating blotch style, amazingly adaptable the easterns really, probably why they thrive in human occupied areas

Re: Sneaky brumation photos
That's very true. I've had a few shinglebacks caught out in the winter weather, when it's been sunny and cool, they've come out to bask in the sun, often on the roads, then wet weather sets in, or the evenings cool down so rapidly, that they literally get left out in the cold. They have succumbed to respiratory infections and had to be warmed up out of their natural cycle or medicated etc, which means their metabolisms rise sharply, negatively affecting recovery. Almost all have recovered eventually, but it is slower and scarring in the lungs from resp infections, can have a long term detrimental effect on their health.
Great point, Richard!
