I Won! An Update on My Blueys

Postby Ellie_A » Fri Jun 29, 2012 8:01 am

I'm very excited this morning because I won a battle of stubborness with my blueys.

Back story on Yoshi:
I adopted a 2 year old male Irian Jaya from a local reptile rescue. He had been fed cat food (and ate frogs that were his cage mates) only. At the rescue he was introduced to eggs, dog food and bananas. When I got him I tried to feed him veggies but he was only interested in the dog food and eggs. After getting some great advice from members here I made up a mixture of veggies, lean ground beef and a little scrambled egg. For almost a month I have been giving him this mixture every 2-3 days and nothing else. He has ignored it completely the entire time, until yesterday. I put the food in his cage in the morning before leaving for work and it was all gone yesterday when I got home. He was obviously very hungry and he has a little weight to gain back so hopefully he will continue to eat his healthy food!

Back story on Jaya:
Jaya was being given away for free on kijiji so I took her home. I am told that she is around 6 years old and she's an Irian Jaya. She was in awful shape when I got her: open sore on her back, missing almost all of her toes, a lot of retained shed on her feet. I have since removed all of the retained shed and her wounds are healing. In her old home she was fed iceberg lettuce and freeze dried crickets, yuck! Her first couple of meals were dog food as she liked it and I wanted her to gain a little weight but that was all she would eat. Again I have since been giving her my mixture every 2-3 days and she has been ignoring it. Last night I came home to find it all gone!

It was a great thing to go home to so I am just thrilled! Hopefully they both continue to eat the healthy food so that I can get them healthy again!

Congrats to you! This story is a great one for newbies who are trying to get their skinks to adapt to a healthier diet. Patience patience patience! See how it paid off? A blue tongue will not starve itself, when they are hungry enough they will eat the "strange, unfamiliar" stuff! Way to keep on track and not give in, good job!
