Dear god take it to a vet! If you had something that exposed bone and flesh, you would immediately be in the hospital. I dont know about reptiles, but gangrene is a big danger to humans with wounds like that!

Definitely not a waiting game. Exposed flesh is an invitation for a bacterial infection that could be very harmful to your skink, and it could easily spread from the tail to other more essential parts of the body.

yes gangrene is definitely a possibility I was thinking of as well. The poor skink! :'[
and i agree, if that was you or a child with exposed open flesh and bone you'd go right to the hospital, to leave the skink in this condition is just plain mean and wrong....not to be rude but please don't neglect his health and just brush it off as a "waiting game" it's no game, he is in serious need of medical attention. :[

Phaemas, It's been a few days: how is your skink? What did the vet say? Did the vet tell you what it was that caused this? Has the injury changed at all? I am interested to see what the vet's advice was because it seems like it isn't a rare injury, would be helpful info if it happened to another member, ya know?

Rocket had the same thing last shed. Just leave it alone, it was probably just stuck shed that finally came off. The skin under it looks a bit odd and raw when the tip comes off, but it's probably nothing to worry about as long as you've been leaving it alone and not messing with it too much. If you're worried about infection while it 'heals' put the skink on paper towel substrate and bump your temps a bit. If you want good advice you need to post pictures, though.

I've been keeping reptiles for many years and it sounds like that is the case to me. I have had probably four different species of lizards with the same problem, including my bluey. It's very dry here and my reptiles sometimes have shed problems.

What looks like bone or flesh is probably just the discolored scales underneath. It looks a bit soft and even wrinkled sometimes too. Let it be (don't touch it or poke it or wet it)and for a day or two and then make the decision to go to a vet if is still odd looking.

I get the distinct impression that Phaemas is often just looking for attention with some of these threads. There is rarely ever photographic evidence to back up her claims and many (if not all) of the threads she starts are very controversial. If this were any other site, I would tell everyone to stop feeding the troll.

Locked. This thread isn't going anywhere and the OP doesn't seem to be around to answer questions and receive feedback.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
