Does the BTS need to....

Postby Joey1983 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:45 am

Hey all... does the BTS diet NEED to have snails, worms, crickets and mice? I would really prefer to use chicken, turkey, eggs and dog food for protien/meat in his diet. I am not really into feeding live foods. Obviously I know about veggies and fruits.. but what abou this meat issue.

Nope~!

Crickets arent generally recommended anyway, where as mice tend to be more of a treat due to the high fat content, I believe? Snails and worms however are quite healthy, perhaps you could look into the snails in a can?

Although you don't HAVE to feed live - I like to on occassion. Skeeter gets dog food (ceasar chicken) every week along with some can-o-snails. I like to give him some super meal worms and tomato worms as a treat. They like the variety and gives a different type of protein.

I ditto about the crickets and mice...those are not on skeeter's menu. Another good source of protein (on occasion) is egg.

I would personally NEVER feed crickets as crickets carry a huge host of reptile parasites including pinworms. They are disgusting, smell disgusting, eat each other when kept in large groups, noisy, and great at escaping into you house never to be seen (but always heard).

Warning about egg: Its not bad for them, but make sure you open the windows after you feed egg, because those poos are going to be RANCID!!! I fed egg once, and NEVER did it again! 3 of my 4 skinks were all in my herp room and together I nearly was sick with how gross that smell was :D I bet the snakes didnt appreciate it either lol

Snails in a can are well received by my blueys if you dont want to do live. However, most really seem to get excited about the prospect of chasing and killing their prey.

I do occasionally feed pinky mice/rats on the rare occasion my snakes wont take them, but its very occasional. I also have 4 skinks, so I cycle who gets the unwanted feeder item. HAHA it sure wont be my Indo for a while...hes starting to get chunky :D
