A proper hello

Postby amb44 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 10:40 pm

Hi everyone,

Since I've already asked a bunch of questions, I figure I should properly introduce myself :)

I'm Amy and I'm from New Zealand. My Eastern, Helo ('heelow'; named after the character on Battlestar Galactica), is my first foray into reptiles, although I've wanted either a beardy or a BTS for quite a few years now. I've always been an animal lover, and have previously owned fish, mice, frogs, axolotls, ferrets, rabbits, and a bird, and currently have a dog, cats, and rats. It's been a bit of a culture shock going from friendly, furry mammals to a reptile, but I think I've adapted now and have come to appreciate Helo on his terms rather than mine. He's endlessly fascinating, and after a week or so I was already thinking that I want more! Either that or leopard geckos. I really, really want some leopard geckos! And maybe getting back into frogs now that I'm an adult and would know what I'm doing...this forum has increased my need for more exotic pets, which is probably a bad thing :)

Anyway, nice to meet you all,

Amy

Welcome :) I really want some Leopard Geckos too, it was a toss up between them and a Beardie but I'm glad I got my little bugger. I also want frogs again too!

There are so many geckos on trademe right now...and way cheaper than i thought too...i would love a beardy, was actually tossing up between them and a BTS right up until the day I bought Helo, but don't want to have to breed live food which I would have to for a beardy.

Yeah having to feed live food makes beardies way more expensive to keep than BTS.

For me it was more the hassle of having to look after yet another group of animals. But the cost was definitely a factor especially when I was looking at buying the tinned crickets. Which is such a weird concept.

Leopard Geckos need all live food as well though. I keep crickets around all the time, but don't breed them. I breed meal worms and am about to start breeding Dubia roaches for something very healthy for all of my lizards too. So that is somewhat similar to a beardie, although they obviously don't eat as much since they are half the size.

thanks everyone! i will be sure to post pics of helo very soon, and some of the other animals too :)

larissa, yep, i was aware that they need live food too, but as you pointed out, the gecko is so much smaller so i wouldn't feel the need to breed anything other than mealworms, and even then i might not even bother.
