A couple shingle vids!

Postby Nae » Mon Apr 02, 2012 8:08 am

I was going through my camera and I found 2 videos I dont recall having posted, so here they are!

(Clickie on the pics~)

Image

(I was thinking, should I cut the video down to the bit where he huffs at me for a possible example to be used in the FAQ section, since we always seem to be trying to explain the difference between huffing and other sounds~)

Image

(The "oi oi" is directed at the dog - She is really good with the shingles, but can get a bit excited when I pick them up! My hello at the end...Oh dear god I sound weird xDDD)

Those are great Nae! I love seeing the variety you find. Every wild shingle you have ever posted seems to fall into the category that some people call the "coastal" form of T.r.rugosa. Where generally did you find these? Or at least, how far from the coast? Thanks for posting those!

Coomassie watched the videos with me! I'm so jealous. And my husband is jealous too. I LOVE shingles.

Not fair! Wild shingles and Zeke? At least you share the cuteness with the rest of us. :D

Wow - those tails are a wee bit thinner than some of their captive counterparts!

I am about 15 minutes drive from the closest beach, so they probably are coastal form!

Correct me if Im wrong, but it only seems to be the types like the asperas thats have the big tails? As Ive honestly never seen one of these types with very big tails, even my Mazi always had a fairly slim tail despite being fed every second day right into adulthood

Thanks Nae! I'm not sure exactly how far inland the coastal form is supposed to extend, but it is really great to know locales of wild skinks whenever possible.

Like Richard said, they do vary some, and "coastal", "hills", and "Goldfiels" are nothing more than made up names to differentiate rugosa from different parts of their range. It really doesn't make much sense to me that these names would have been made up in the first place if there weren't at least subtle differences in the animals from the different areas. The more animals we can see from known locales, the better picture we can get of differences.
