treating pinworms help?

Postby Spindown » Wed Feb 29, 2012 10:57 am

so the Northern male I got in the beginning of the month was spending his time in QT downstairs, and I noticed he was having some really strange poop issues. The first one was almost completely undigested, and then from there he had diarreah every day. Obviously I took him to the vet. I'm totally mystified as to how his previous owner didnt notice these symptoms...but anyway, the vet said he was just totally loaded with pinworms. (sorry Brad, my bf REFUSES to let me put poop in the fridge to be mailed :( Now I've got some Panacur, and I plan to start his first dose within the next few days.

The reason I'm waiting is this: The cage that I have him in now is a crappy acrylic tank I got for free. My concern is that it has a huge sealed crack that runs all the way across the bottom, and I'm worried that i wont be able to get it clean enough to prevent him from reinfecting himself with the worms once i start treatment. I'm looking for a better tank, but in the meantime, do you think he can wait a few days more while i find a tank that i CAN clean?
What cleaning measures would you recommend to help make sure he gets totally cured? I normally use lysol wipes, wipe that off with paper towel and then spray with F-10 at a 250:1 ratio. Do you think that would be effective enough?

I think Susann's skinks had pinworms, and Brad told her how to treat it. Ask Brad he should know :)

I don't think people read this and decided not to help you - I read it and didn't really know the answer so didn't have anything useful to contribute. It sucks when no one knows the answer, or at least the people who are online at the time you posted it can't help, but it is better than getting a lot of bad advice from people who are unsure and just guessing.

Like ML said, Brad might be a good one to ask.

Would love some advice as well. Thanks to the heads up from Brad I know one of my animals has pinworms as well. Since I only have two and will admit to them sharing dishes etc. they are likely both infected. I plan on moving them to sterilite tubs but would love to know how to clean them to remove/kill pinworms eggs.

This is the first time I'm seeing this post. I treated one of my leos for pinworms. I used Panacur and cleaned his tank every day. I used the green Wipeout on his tank. He is in a polysytrene tank. I would use really hot water and vinegar to get the tank really clean (it should run through the crack and clean it out) and then rinse with hot water until the tank no longer smells of vinegar. Treating for pinworms is pretty simple. You basically have to prevent the animal from coming in contact with the source (usually their own poo). This is much easier to do on papertowels than other substrates.
