Dry scales and climbing

Postby Linnea » Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:01 pm

I posted before about Litchies dry scales, and im starting to get more concerned regarding this.
the scales are not just sounding horribly dry when he moves, but they are a bit looser, especially under his head, but its pretty much all belly scales from snout to tailtip.

He is super active and constantly tried to climb the terrarium doors, and while doing so he really rubs his belly scales badly against everything. im even afraid he is injuring his back, he just keeps climbing the glass(in the two places where the slide doors can be opened....so im guessing he wants to go out?)
he moves from one side, tries to climb, fails and falls, then moves to the other side. around 7 times a day. i get worried each time i see him falling.

could i use this salve under his head only? (its where it looks flakey the most) The salve was once for military use, so it can even be used in cooking, and its very mild. we used it for my dogs feet in winter with incredible results. i think its sold in USA and Canada too.

ill post the contents just to make sure.

Adeps Bovis, Arachis Hypogaea, Cera Alba, Alcohol, Citric Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT, Sorbic Acid, Vanillin. (and peanut butter oil)

in any case he will be getting another slighly oily bath tomorrow.

should i let him walk around in my room to make the climbing problems better? he has plenty of hides and 3 sides are covered perfectly. im sure this is a boy vs spring thing, its just he is gonna injure himself soon.

Change to a substate that holds humidity and mist sometimes. Or add a humid hide. The dry scales are a normal problem in dry winter months and on dry substrates, but it's easily fixed.

As for the climbing if you have somewhere safe to let him wander that's a good plan. Otherwise try putting some decorations in the way of where he climbs up to discourage him. It's not the best thing to have them climbing but it's not terrible either.

Does he have a water dish big enough he can soak in? It is super dry in my apartment so all the reptiles have large waterdishes and moist hides so they can regulate humidity.
