Mouth Abcess / Bad Scales??

Postby reptilove » Fri Jan 27, 2012 8:04 pm

So I work at a pet store, all our reptiles usually come in perfectly fine. Well we got 2 baby BTS and one looks fine other than a few bad scales on the head, but the other one has a strange lump on its lower jaw along with a crusty eye. I'm going to make sure the one with the eye/jaw problem goes to the vet we have in the store but they are not the intelegent on reptiles and I highly doubt they will know a thing, hopefully they know something. But if they don't know I want to make sure I can still get the baby some help, because I don't wanna buy a baby and spend more money to get it help, when i can use a few things the vet would have. Hopefully i can get some opinions.

the baby on the left is the one with the crusty eye and you can see the lump on the bottom jaw, and on both of them the have some ugly head scales

I've had experience with 1 absess only, so take my advice as pretty newbish. Absess would need to be lanced and drained. Topical antibiotic for the absess along with oral/injectable antibiotic. If the eye is from an RI the antibiotic will help with that too. 24/7 heat should be provided to fight off infections.

Both babies should also received food dusted with calcium + D3 IMO. They just look like they might be having some MBD issues starting to me.

It looks like they may have been in some fights.

Poor babies... </3 I'd say a vet visit, at least for the one with an abscess. I'm not experienced in any way.

does the skink seem to be in pain if you touch the potential abscess?

I agree with Fatal, there does appear to be the possibility of some MBD, particularly the one with the mandible lump which may or may not be an abscess but also to do with MBD.

If it is an abscess it should be treated ASAP. Reptilian abscesses are encapsulated and lack enzymes which allow the pus to be in a fluid state. They need to be thoroughly debrided as any residual from even the capsule can lead to a recurrence. In my opinion, lancing and draining is not enough to clear fully. If it was my BTS I would want the vet to surgically debride, leave the site open to flush everyday with an abx solution; or packed each day with Manuka honey with an UMF of 25 or above. Alternatively, it could be closed with an implant of abx beads. Supplemented with a full course of abx, preferably one with anaerobic efficacy.

Good luck! I can't add anything to what Fatal and El Lobo already said.

well, i took the one with the mouth abcess an crusty eye to the vet and the stupid people didnt even notice the bump on his mouth, and i clearly told them to look at both the eyes an lump on his jaw and all they heard was eye, makes me mad so hopefully now since i pointed out what was all wrong with him they will help him. So i guess I will see how things go, but if they have to adopt him out since he is not sellable I'm gonna take him to na real vet and get him all fixed up, hopefully.

A real vet is most definitely necessary, IMO.
