Screen tops necessary?

Postby HarleyK » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:34 pm

Are screen tops necessary for an adult northern in a standard 40 gallon breeder? Can they push off their tails? I'm seeing deals for these tanks, but the ones that come with screen tops are a lot more expensive. Plus, if I'm using a ceramic heat emitter, the screen top would just reflect more heat.

What do you guys think?

For that height, I would recommend a screen top. From my experience, a screen top does not reflex away much heat at all.

Screen Top - $20
New skink -$150

IMO, it is just a cheap insurance policy.

I have seen mine use its tail to gain height several times...and the method works well :)

Mine can climb out... she is a 22 inch long Merauke, and has no problem climbing to the top of a 40 breeder! Her tank at my house is larger and taller, but when we stay at my girlfriend's it is an issue! I won't leave the top off if I have to step out, only if I am sitting there.

Go for the screen top. Even if your guy isn't a climber, it's still safer. All you need is for him to get nosy one time and he'll be out. I also like knowing that there is something between him and his lights.

I definitely recommend screen tops. Apart from 100% keeping the animal in, it keeps things from falling in as well. Kids throwing stuff, stuff falling mysteriously, etc. Plus, it always seems like BTS eventually figure out a way to escape if there's no top! I also highly recommend a BRIGHT heat source such as a spot light if there is no other light provided in the cage. I've always felt a bright spot lamp mimics the sun and is important. Just my opinion though!

It's good to keep the sweet, cuddly cats out too! :)
