if you supplement D3 that should be enough.

when UV hits the skin, it helps the body produce D3 in order to process calcium. Jeff had a really good example of a study, look in the most recent post about mbd :)

i am not 100% sure about this, so lets hope more experienced forum members will respond. but you should not worry, that i am certain about.

it takes quite some time(im not to sure, but its not like it will show after 2 weeks or something) - but it can vary from skink to skink, and also depends on what condition the bones already are in. for example, a very old skink may face the same issues as elderly humans and have a naturally progressed bone decrease, which means they are more sensitive to lack of nutrients.

MBD can occur in any living being with an inner skeleton, it simply means a de-calcification, as they cannot rebuild the bone structure with new calcium. this progresses over time, and often it will not be seen until there are "bumps".

these "bumps", or oddly shaped body parts, wrongly angled legs and feet, are a result of the skeleton getting weaker and breaking, when the bone heals, it has limited resources and heals it together just as is. lets say you break a leg and decide not to go to the doctor, if it heals it will be wrongly angled as well, a common issue a long time ago when medical care wasnt practiced in that way.

if im wrong, just delete my post.......sorry T____T

First off, check if the bulb had a warrenty. Some UVB bulbs come with pretty nice warranties.

Second, if you're supplementing with calcium + D3 then a UVB bulb isn't really necessary, so don't worry about taking some time to replace it or not replacing it (if you chose to).

Linnea, I think the only part of your explanation that may be off is that the bumbs are caused by breaks in the bones. While MBD may mean bones are more likely to break, the bends are not usually from breaks. A broken bone that has re-healed would be a rather sharp angle (L), not a gradual curve (S).
