Basking rock

Postby lemon1 » Fri Nov 04, 2011 2:55 pm

I have a pretty large basking rock in my new enclosure . The temperature of the rock is between 95 -102 . When I touch the rock it's not cold but not warm . Does that matter ? My other rock the temp is 100 but the rock is half the size and it feels warm to touch .

If your body temperature is normal (98.6), 100 degrees shouldn't feel warm to the touch. It's about the same temperature as your hand. How are you measuring the temperature? If you are using a temperature gun it will give you an accurate surface temperature. As long as the temperature is right, you don't have to worry about how it feels.

I had this exact question when I first set up my tank. I thought the basking rock was too cold because it didn't feel warm to me. So I got the temp gun, and now I check several times a day to make sure it is a good temp. Get a Temp gun, best thing I have purchased for the care of my skinks!!
