The best thing to do is to wathch the weight. My gravid female will gain 15%-25% of the body weight during pregnancy. For example, I had a female northern that weighed 699 grams when she mated. the week she gave birth, she weighed 845 grams. That means she gained 146 grams while she was gravid. 146 / 699 = 21%.
Sometimes they look fat after about 8 weeks, but sometimes they don't. You really need to weigh them to be sure if they are gaining weight. Most of mine stop gaining weight at about 9 weeks after mating.
Also many will not eat for 3-4 weeks after mating if they are gravid. Some will bask in their hot spot more than usual. There are other signs to look for for like heavy breathing, but that doesn't happen until the very end.
Sometimes it is very easy to know that a skink is gravid, and other times you can't tell at all.
