Brumation - how long?

Postby missmacabre » Wed Jul 27, 2011 8:52 pm

How long should brumation last? It's been almost 4 months since Onyxia has been up, he's had a drink here and there but hasn't eaten since he started brumating, starting to get a little worried. Oh and he was born in Dec 08.

I know they don't eat during brumation but this is his longest since I've had him.

3 months is usually good, have you tried to heat him back up?

I was thinking about turning his lights back on but it's still pretty cold here in NZ and have been having a lot of cold snaps, might start turning them back on though, I miss the grumpy little bugger

In Southern Aus, Easterns normally from May to September. In NZ you are further South so depends on when ave daily temps get to around 20C, you could be waiting a while unless you decide to wake your bluey up.
If you wait, all that happens is that you get older. M. Andretti

Cool that makes me feel better, was just worried that he hadn't eaten in so long.

So long as he has good condition I wouldn't worry too much. In the wild 5 or 6 month is not unusual.

He's in great condition, hasn't lost weight, just very sleepy and anti-social

Here in Melbourne it's still winter according to the calendar but all my skinks have come out and the lights in their vivs have been off. The ones on the verandah have come out - Bliss was thirsty. The shingles just looked at me; and Bailey has been out for a couple of days. I've had to turn the lights and heating back on. Obviously the lizards think it's spring !! :D

It's a nice sunny warmish day here so I decided to turn Onyxia's lights on, and lo and behold here he is in all his glory  In a foul mood though and huffed at me several times when I picked him up to put him under his heat lamp
