Those *darn "Mites" are back!!!!! better pics in ho

Postby EvoSolley » Tue Jul 19, 2011 11:33 pm

ok guys,

as some of you all may remember i found little tiny tanish bugs on raptor about a month ago. deep cleaned his cage and used JurrasiMite and low and behold the *darn things are back!!! does anyone know what these little bugs are and if i should worry about them in Raptors cage?!?! they are driving me up a friggin wall!!

a couple things to note. below i have 2 pics and also 2 really zoomed in pics even though they are really grainy.

tried to squish one today with my finger. It took me three times until i was actually able to squish it (took a lot of force to kill the thing).

sprayed the one in the cup with JurassiMite and it died. don't know if it was the chemicals in the spray or if it just drowned in it.

lastly i took out my hermit crabs food dish (which is in a separate tank and shelf in my room) and discovered the bugs in there as well.

any help guys?? could these things possibly be the "good mites" Hypoaspis miles??

Well upon further research i discovered that these little bugs are called "booklice" or "Psocoptera". apparently from all that i have read, they are harmless bugs that actually feed on mold and decaying stuff/ droppings in the tank. I guess they could be considered a tad bit beneficial to have in the tanks. I still want to get rid of them but I'm not as worried as much now.

Anyone have experience with these kinds of bugs?

Mold and decaying stuff isn't good to have in tanks! If that is what they live on, then if you keep the enclosure very clean and possibly lower the humidity then they won't have anything to live off of. Good luck getting rid of them!
