Minimum height requirement

Postby reaperreptiles » Wed Jul 27, 2011 3:54 pm

Im curious as to what everyone thinks the minimum height requirement for a bluey setup would be. Im going through options on different cages and styles from various websites and im curious what you all think.

also if you know any good sites that have awesome plastic or melamine cages at good prices let me know. seems the most affordable are either boamaster, dragons4you or repti-racks. shout out if you know of any good companies. Thanks guys.

The height doesn't need to be too much as long as the tub/cage has enough length and width. So I'd probably say that 4"-7" of height would be fine, but then again I'm no expert so I could be wrong.

I would say 12", just so an adult bluey would have some trouble getting out. :D

I think it depends if you have a front-opening or top-opening tank. For front-opening, I require 16+ inches. Otherwise you don't have room to get around/above the skink, and my guys would take advantage of that and bite. 16" also lets light in nicely, and gives room for a light and branches and such.

For top-opening, I would say maybe 12" minimum to leave room for hides and substrate and such. But you could probably go down to 6" if height was a big issue, providing the temps could still be safely created and the skink couldn't escape/rub his nose against things.

The other thing I would worry about is heating and lighting for the tank. If you are using a UTH and a light that doesn't emit heat, lower is ok but if you are using a UV light then it should be about 12 inches away. Too close and it can cause problems. Just something to keep in mind.

Boamasters are really nice but really expensive. I wish I could afford those for all my guys but we ended up with some nice high impact molded polystyrene tanks instead. The front opening is great. Post pictures when you get it all setup!

Yeah they are, but there the cheapest I've found so far. I really can't afford them, I've gotta save up for them. There really nice quality and id rather spend an extra 50 bux for quality than have to build some myself that will probably be sloppy and ugly.
