Irian Jaya with eye gunk?

Postby awesomehunter » Sun Jul 24, 2011 12:19 am

Hi, newbie here! Got ushered into the world of awesome skinks a couple of months ago, and I'm enjoying the company of mine ever since. I got my Irian Jaya from an owner who took great care of his skinks, and I got the friendliest out of the bunch (and also the most affectionate).

As I was taking him out for his morning walk today, though, I noticed something sticking out of his left eye. I was immediately scared about respiratory infection since I hear about eye discharges, but this one doesn't seem to be in the same vein. It was a small piece of soft gunk, transparent-greyish, sticking to the cornea of his eye. I'd say it's kind of close to something like snot, except that it's one soft small chunk rather than liquidy or mucus-y. I carefully removed it and checked him for RI symptoms - he doesn't seem to be sneezing a lot, he's active, and other than what I found he's not leaking mucus from his mouth, nose or eyes. Nothing really strange besides that.

Should I take this as a warning for RI or is it something more benign, like what we get when we sleep, like eye grit or something?

Thanks in advance!

Er...a photo of him or of the small piece of gunk I took out of his eye? Because I've compared him to healthy pictures of skins and he's pretty much identical. But like I said, it doesn't seem to be developing again, and he has no other RI symptoms.

Didn't read the bit about you having removed it  Anyway sounds OK. Strange things happen sometimes. Like all of us they can get irrigations from time to time.

Been doing some plumbing lately Scott? (irrigation, Im sorry )

I would definitely agree it was probably just something in his eye  A bit of cat/dog food maybe? Just keep an eye on him, and if nothing else pops up Im sure hes fine =D

Ah, I see D: Thanks a lot for the replies, they took a load off! Yup, I'm keeping a closer eye at him now, but I'll be sending him over to the vet this weekend for his routine checkup anyway.
